What is Translation Memory (TM) software? TM is a database that stores “segments”, which can be sentences, paragraphs or sentence-like units (headings, titles or elements in a list) that have previously been translated, to assist human translators.

The TM software used by TW Languages is ‘Memsource’. This works in a cloud based environment and provides a wide-range of terminology, quality and project management tools for the Translation Project Managers and their team of translators.

Yes, using TM software is a benefit to the Client and a small example of this can be seen in that:

-We received a request from a client to translate a large technical manual from English to Spanish. We have previously translated this manual into other languages for this client. Having run the source file of the manual through our TM software there were 100% matches which identified that this file had already been translated into Spanish. The Client was convinced this hadn’t been done as he couldn’t find the file. By using our TM project management system, we were able to identify when the translation was completed and the date and time this was returned, which has since helped the Client track down the original Spanish version we sent.

This happens to all of us in our busy schedules in particular being inundated with emails. However, by using TM software we were able to identify what had been translated and we are pleased to say we saved the Client over £1k in unnecessary translation costs.
